On the 11th of March a new club was founded in Gauteng. It will be called the Ile de France Goudveld club. Management is sitting, from left Deegan du Plessis. Eddie Sloan, Flip Engelbrecht and Mitch van den Bos. On behalf of the Ile de France Society we want to wish all the members and management the best of luck with this new task laid upon them.
The Botswana Sheep Breeders Association invited the Ile de France Society of SA to give a presentation on the IDF breed at their workshop held on the 24th October in Gaborone.
Gerrit Erasmus, president of the Society, Bossie Clarke an older breeders of the society, and Herman Labuschagne from Studbook left for Botswana on Friday the 23rd and arrived in Lobatsi at around 2pm. We were met there by Mr Aobakwe and were immediately invited to visit a farmer who was Ile de France mad and very proud of his IDF purchases. This was also to be the venue for practical side of the workshop the next day.
We then left for Gaborone where we were given accommodation in a top hotel.
The next morning at 9 am the workshop started at the hotel where approximately 70 people attended. The workshop was sponsored by THE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT BANK who also appeared very willing to assist young farmers.
Bossie Clarke gave a very good presentation on the IDF breed and Herman Labuschagne gave them information on what Studbook’s role is in the stud industry.
We then visited the same farmer in the pm and were surprised by the effort he had put in as far as kraals were concerned to make it a successful visit. His workers even had the farm and IDF t-shirts on. General farm management of sheep and breed standards were practically demonstrated.
About 30 people attended this practical workshop and left very enthusiastic IDF supporters
We returned to SA on Sunday morning.
We were made to feel very special and were received with open arms. The feedback already has been exceptional, with many enquiries showing a keen interest in the IDF.
The local government are also keen to help aspirant farmers.
Mr Aobakwe. is already busy to arrange next year’s workshop and are expecting some further assistance from us to develop the IDF breed in Botswana. There is a definite opportunity for the IDF in Botswana and we should exploit this.
